Before I moved to China, I was fascinated by the study of Chinese language, history, and culture. I learned to speak Mandarin more or less without an accent, and I even married a Chinese woman. Something about living in China, however, just got under my skin. I always felt like having a conscience was incompatible with acclimating to "the society" in China.
Now, all the news articles that are coming out about the harassment of foreign journalists in China remind me how I felt every time I looked at a fat-faced commie in China. I wanted to smash his face. Indeed, this feeling is one reason I've decided to join the U.S. armed forces.
Pictures like this--of admittedly large but soft-looking Chinese police officers--provide great motivation when I go on long runs or do strength training. I push myself to become mentally and physically tougher, and then I imagine one day having to stand up to one of these commies. They won't find it as easy to beat me as they recently beat a foreign journalist.
I feel the same way as you. I went to China from England thinking the same thing. I have a liberal point of view and am pretty tolerant, but I quickly grew to despise the CCP. Slithering liars and crooks poison China and the rest of the world by seeking only money. How dare they call themselves Communist!
